Here is the end product of a 1964 Stratocaster finish restoration. Dave from MLP Forum reached out to me and wanted his strat refinished. He had explained that it had been refinished by the previous owner with poly during the 1980s. We went with an aged Surf Green, light distressing, weather checking and parts shadows. During the process we found that it had been refinished several times during its life. One of the previous refine was of the American flag. The previous owner may have been inspired by Jimi Hendrix Star Spangled Banner performance at Woodstock in the summer of 1969.
Here it is with the old poly refinish. I am happy we could gets the poly off of this beauty and restore it back to its original glory.
The pictures below show how we will apply Parts Shadows. This simulates how the nitro will yellow over years of exposer to ultraviolet light. The areas under the parts will remain the original color creating a shadow effect.
The pictures below show what we found after stripping the old poly finish. We were very surprised to find that a previous owner painted an American flag on the guitar.
